FAQ’S
At No Green Pools we believe being properly educated is key for a safe and healthy swimming pool. Here you’ll find answers to commonly asked swimming pool questions.
A simple test using a normal bucket can be used to determine whether a pool is leaking. Normally a pool evaporates a minimum 1 inch to maximum 2.5 inches per week; and this factor of evaporation should be taken into account when performing the test. The following is the method to self-perform the test:
- Fill the pool with water till the normal level
- Fill the bucket with pool water equal to the pool level
- Switch off the pool pump and other such equipment
- Place a mark inside of the bucket till the point it’s filled.
- Place a mark outside the bucket, this is for the determination of pool water level
- Now resume the normal pump and pool operation
- Check the 2 water levels after 24 or 48 hours only after this time the samples are useless and the test needs to be re performed.
- In case of rain or any other disruption or flow of water the test becomes invalid and should be performed again.
- Result determination: if the pool water that is the outside mark goes below than the bucket water that is the inside level than this means there is a leak in the pool.
The volume of water in the pool is calculated in gallons. General mathematical formulae as per the shape of your pool are as follows:
Total Gallons=length*width*average depth*7.5 (Square)
Total Gallons=length*width*average depth *7.5(Rectangle)
Total Gallons= (2*diameter)*average depth*5.9 (Circle)
Total Gallons= long diameter*short diameter*average depth*5.9 (Oval)
Average depth= (depth of the deepest end + depth of the shallowest end)/2
All measurements should be in feet.
During the hottest part of the day; this helps to keep the water clear and prevent the growth of fungus and algae. By running the filtration system during the hottest part of the day it will deter chlorine evaporation.
Ideally the filter should be operated the entire day to ensure maximum water circulation and cleanliness of the pool. It is highly recommended to run the filtration system a minimum of 4 to 6 hours in winters and 8 hours in summers.
Most of the manufacturers recommend a complete filter break down and clean up at least twice a year. The frequency may increase keeping in mind the size of your pool, filter, the amount debris collected and pool usage
For the determination of filter size the following formula should be used:
Filter Area=Flow rate/Filter Media Rate.
Flow Rate=Pool Volume/Turnover rate/60min-hour.
To determine the Volume, the above formulae stated in the answer of Q2 can be used.
In case of doubts or to round off, you should oversize the amount and never undersize it.
The most popular different types of filters are:
Sand- this is the least popular one, though extremely easy to use. The only major disadvantage is that the filter has to be frequently used with chlorinated water to remove sand from filter. They can pick up 50 to 100 microns; low rate of efficiency.
Cartridge-they are extremely user friendly with good operation results. The disadvantage is that the replacement cartridges tend to wear out easily and are expensive to replace. Filter 30-50 microns; medium efficient, but algae and fungus might pass through it.
Diatomaceous Earth- highly recommended as provides the best result in the market, but it is difficult to use and require constant care and attention. Filter as low as 2 microns; the most efficient.
Microns are small particles of algae and bacteria that are detectable by human eye.
To exactly know the issue and the solution you can always give us a call. Generally the reasons for this problem are:
- The pump is undersized for the workload, this might be causing it to produce such noises and overheat.
- Partially blocked suction line or any other to and from the pump.
- The motor bearings have started faltering and needs replacement.
Standard pool pumps consume energy equivalent to all the electric home appliances combined together which is approximately $1000 per annum; on the other hand variable speed pumps cut up to 90% energy consumption and save an annual expenditure of $1500. Yes we do perform these installations.
Yes specific pools pumps qualify; you can call us and tell your pump specifications for details.
Cyanuric acid more commonly known as the stabilizer is added in swimming pools to reduce the decomposition of chlorine from the sun rays. With the correct levels of cyanuric acid almost 80% of chlorine consumption can be reduced. The most appropriate range is between 50 to 80 ppm.
Chlorine is a type of sanitizer; these are disinfectants which prevent the growth of virus bacteria and other water borne diseases which have a harmful effect on the health of the swimmer. The only thing to remember is that the pool should be sanitized with a chemical which leaves behind a residual impact. Apart from chlorine, bromine and salt chlorination can also be used.
Salt chlorinators basically convert the salts already present in the water to chlorine gas, sanitize the water with this gas and then convert it back into salt. Salts have to be added more than once a year as adding fresh water disrupts salt composition which affects the entire process.
Salt chlorinators are safe and secure in operation in comparison to the traditional system. As here the chlorine operation is continuously being performed even when the pool is in use thus the disease control is under operation at all times. The conventional system can work only when the pool is not under operation. Therefore it might be possible that while you were using the pool a lot of bacteria and virus growth had taken place and you might get affected due to it.
While using a salt system every 3 months salt cell cleaning is a must along with constant review of water pH which tends to get high and require large amounts of muriatic acid.
Yes, we provide all the pool services; from installation, maintenance to replacement and repairs. We are just a call away!
TDS is the abbreviation for Total Dissolved Solids; the accumulation of all the dissolved elements present in the water. TDS comprises of source water, dust and wind particles, swimmers waster, salts and chemicals that are added and all the bacteria and algae’s that grow. This accumulation can never be stopped any kind of addition of activity in the pool results in TDS. Evaporation of water also results in TDS as pure water evaporates leaving behind the residue.
When your TDS exceeds 2000PPM. As the normal range of TDS is 1000-2000 PPM. Chemically there is no remedy to reduce it therefore for the complete or partial water draining has to be performed, approximately after every 3 to 5 years.
Yes you can; but to do so; you should remember that certain prescribed methods should be done. You should have a submersible pump and should be familiar with the use along with the purpose and in the correct proportion. The startup chemicals are stain out, cyanuric acid, chlorine and acid. Take proper precautions while draining the water also; as the filter will not work once the water drops below the skimmer level and the filter grids are filled with strains and debris. For expert services you can always contact us we will provide the most up to date refilling and chemical proportioning services.
Phosphates are the major source and cause of algae in the swimming pool. Like all living organisms algae also flourishes and grows with the help of nutrients and phosphates. Phosphates enter the pool from the surrounding garden decks, lawns, fertilizers, roaming birds, and other dust particles which randomly enter the pool waters. This build up eventually becomes the source of algae growth. Lanthanum based compound removers are available in the market; these can reduce the amount of algae in the pools reducing to a great level.
A pool should be drained and acid washed to remove discoloration which is caused by chemicals every 5 to 7 years. An acid wash is basically exposing off and stripping a tiny layer of the plaster which is on the top. As a result of this a fresh layer of plaster underneath is exposed. An acid wash will remove off hard color and chemical stains on the plaster. The stripping off exposes a new layer thus the brightness of the plaster tends to increase. An acid wash does not remove heavy penetrating stains from the plasters. This should only be done by professionals and never be self-tried.
No it has nothing to do with chlorine. Metal is the reason of this discoloration. When the dissolved metals elements in the water particularly copper, iron and manganese react with the metals attached at the hair shaft and in the process get oxidized by chlorine a green residue is left behind. To remove this color that is residue from the hair you should use the special swimmer shampoo which contains the chemical Ethylenediamine tetra acid (EDTA).
Dogs love swimming pool; they like love to swim, and drink the water in the pool. The water in the pool is chlorinated and thus not good for the dog. Swimming in the chlorinated water causes the dog’s skin to get dry and itchy as it removes the natural oil from the dog’s fur and skin. Drinking such chlorinated water cause dryness in the throat and esophagus of the dog.
Ducks will avoid the pool if the water is obscured from the eyesight or if the pool gives a feel of being used. For the purpose you can fill up the open water surface with as much water as you can. Throw in some large multi colored beach balls and floats especially the alligator shaped. Tightly stretch a few safety pool ropes across the pool; this gives an illusion that the pool is full and will prevent the ducks from making it a home for themselves.
You can swim with lights on only if the lights have a GFCI-Ground fault Circuit Interrupter. You should monthly check it by pressing the test and then the reset button. If the button does not depress after pressing the test and then the reset button, this means that the lights are not functioning and are not safe for such a use.
No, never it is extremely unsafe. This means that it is time to reinstall the entire lightning system as there is leakage in the housing.
It might be because your GFI has tripped. For the purpose you should press the test button then reset button as stated in the answer of Q23 and then try to switch on the lights.
No Never; please never try any such thing. Electricity and water together only result in shock or death. Therefore, in all such situation the entire light fixture needs to be replaced and for the purpose give us a call as our professionals will perform this work.
After certain attempts even your GFI is constantly tripping, this might be because of a leakage or because water might have seeped in or because of a direct short out. In this situation it is unsafe to swim with the pool lights on therefore give us a call right away so that we can fix this issue.

No we don’t. As if we add water while performing works like vacuuming and scrubbing it will be difficult for us to see the bottom of the pool. Our technicians are at your place for a short span of time only which is not enough for this task of adding water in the pool. Our technicians complete their tasks before leaving a place this is what satisfies the customer and makes them happy; therefore if our technician opens the water and then forgets to close it this will adversely affect our relation. Having and keeping a happy customer is our priority.
At least 2/3 up to the skimmer opening situated on the pool side.
If you have a modern and new pool they have an auto fill float valve which can be used to refill the pool. In case of the conventional pool system a hose pipe or a manual filled valve can be used.
No; it’s not necessary and there is no such need. But we recommend you to own one as it will help you clean and maintain the pool on a daily basis when we are not around or in between our weekly trips.
Yes! We recommend you to empty the basket especially during the autumn season and the times of the year when the winds are strong. As too much debris, twigs and leaves in the basket will hamper the circulation of water and dry out and negatively impact on the pump.
No, a pool should never be drained for more than a couple of days never for the whole off season. Without water the plaster would crack and in extremely rare instances with a high water table and a dry pool the entire pools have risen or popped out of the ground.
No; if you have grass and cement constructed pool decks and yards they won’t flood; most of the backyards have drainage systems that seeps the water away. If you are still worried you can backwash the filter and lower the water level to the desired level. Be sure to add DE as soon as you are done or there will be added work such as an additional filter cleaning.
This will depend on the size, shape and depth of the pool. Whether; the pool is in open roof less deck or a roofed room or basement. Another important factor is the size and rating of the heater (BTU rating).
An average sized spa which can hold up to 580 gallons of water approximately takes 45 minutes to reach between the temperatures range of 55 to 104 using a gas heater. In case the desired results are not achieved with in this timeframe this means there is some issue in the heater either it requires service or the heater is too small for the task.
Normally electric heaters take an extremely long while to heat up water, approximately 4 to 5 degrees per that is to reach the temperature of 104 a spa can take up to 6 to 8 hours. Therefore you must have a cover to lid the spa and retain the heat, in case you don’t have a cover buy one immediately as this will not only retain heat but also assist in it and save you money.
